Fremantle Seaweed’s Mission to Combat Climate Change

Since 2020, Fremantle Seaweed has dedicated itself to growing seaweed as a dual-purpose initiative to combat climate change and provide a sustainable food source.

Seaweed is a powerful ally in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and ensuring food security for the world’s growing population. Particularly, feeding Asparagopsis seaweed to cattle can reduce methane emissions by up to 80%. Additionally, seaweed cultivation helps clean and de-acidify oceans by absorbing nutrients and CO2.

Carbon capture, organic fertiliser, and a nutritious snack all in one.

Fremantle Seaweed pioneers seaweed farming in Australia, cultivating Asparagopsis for methane-reducing cattle feed and various edible seaweed varieties, such as Seagrapes, Sea Lettuce, and Golden Kelp, in their 32-hectare aquaculture lease in Fremantle, WA. Their seaweed is utilised for carbon sequestration, organic fertiliser, and as a nutritious snack.

Fremantle Seaweed aims to scale up their production, capable of removing the equivalent emissions of 200,000 cars from the road and substituting $40M worth of imported seaweed.

With global protein demand growing at 4% annually and livestock contributing 11% of national GHG emissions, their mission is critical. They seek to increase aquaculture equipment, deploy a containerized hatchery, design a seaweed harvesting vessel, build a capable team, and expand partnerships locally and internationally.
